TíNíT Dynamite BBQ lives up to name at Roc City Rib Fest

For some, Memorial Day grilling and BBQing was all about food, fun, family and friends. For others – like T’N’T Dynamite BBQ – it was about the thrill of competition cooking and who could walk away with overall bragging rights.
For brothers Tom and Tim Rohr, competitive barbeque is a family affair. The brothers, along with Tom’s wife Nancy and various nieces and nephews, make up T’N’T Dynamite BBQ.
The brothers’ initials and the AC/DC song “TNT,” which serves as the team’s theme song, inspired their team name.
T’N’T was named the Kingsford Points Chase winner at Roc City Rib Fest in Rochester, N.Y. over Memorial Day weekend. It was the team’s first time competing at the event.
T’N’T competes at 13-15 contests each year, including Roc City Rib Fest and their favorite competition, the BBQ Pit in Norwalk, Conn. The BBQ Pit includes several auxiliary categories like New England clam chowder, wings and chili.
Their most memorable win came in Westport, Conn., where they won their first Reserve Grand Championship. They also took home first place in pork.
Tim and Tom’s love affair with BBQ began in the 1990s when they started grilling and smoking meat in their backyards. Intrigued by the idea of competitive barbeque, the brothers entered the sport in 2005 with the main goal of seeing how their ‘que stacked up against the competition. They also wanted to learn more about the art of BBQ and grilling and hoped to pick up on some tips and techniques.
Tom offered up the following tip to future grillers and ‘quers – invest in a good instant read thermometer and pull the meat off when it’s within five degrees of the desired temperature.
