Burnin’ Bob Burns Up Worland
Sep 16, 2011

“Whatcha burnin’ Bob,” can be heard from time to time as friends and well-wishers drop by to visit Bob and Donna Oldfield.  Bob and Donna comprise the barbeque team Burnin’ Bob’s Butts N Bones and they’re burnin’ up the Kingsford Points Chase charts after securing precious points and a Grand Championship at the 7th Annual Pepsi Wyoming State BBQ Championship & Bluegrass Festival in Worland, Wyo.

“Worland is a neat little contest,” remarked Bob Oldfield. “It’s a small town out in the middle of Wyoming and the people there are just great.”

Oldfield remembers back to the first time they travelled to the event.

“As I was pulling up, I blew a tire on the smoker. So that wasn’t a good start,” said Oldfield. “So the next year as we’re coming in, I blew another tire! That second time they helped me out and got the tire replaced, no charge! There are some really nice people up there.”

Last year Burnin’ Bob took the Reserve in Worland and this year they built on what they learned in order to bring home the Grand Championship.

“We had a really good cook. This one was just right for us,” stated Bob after the event.

Bob attributes some tweaks to his brisket as being one of the contributing factors to the big win. A little bit hotter, a little bit faster and Bob’s got a better product that’s juicier and is helping them win championships.

Along with tweaks to the brisket, Burnin’ Bob’s Butts N Bones success is due to teamwork. It’s not just a one man show. Once Bob pulls the meat off, Donna’s work brings the team together. “She makes the boxes and takes it from there,” says Oldfield discussing the importance of his wife’s role on the team. “Timing is huge, we’ve only got a 10 minute window or we’re disqualified.”

They’ve come a long way from Bob’s self-described “Jed Clampett trailer” they brought to their first event, to winning Worland this year.

“I just didn’t give up and kept after it,” he says.  “It started back with a little contest in Denver. I took a look and said I bet I could do this.”

With prize money in hand, Kingsford points on the board and another Grand Championship to brag about, Bob and Donna have definitely proven they really can burn it up.
