Kingsford Points Chase fired up in Hammond, LA
Apr 04, 2011

Chix, Swine & Bovine has spent the last two years trying to get into the Hammond Blues & BBQ Challenge in Hammond, La., since the contest only allows 50 teams to compete. All their hard work finally paid off. Not only did they enter the

contest, but also they took home the first big Kingsford Points Chase check of the season. Additionally, the team was named the Grand Champion.

“The Hammond Blues & BBQ event was fantastic,” said Chix, Swine & Bovine head cook Mike Richter. “The community really embraced us and we are excited to not only have won the Grand Champion title, but to also see our name on the big Kingsford check.”

Now in its eighth year, the Hammond Blues & BBQ Challenge raises money for the Special Olympics of Louisiana and TARC, which provides aid to persons with disabilities.

“We’d like to thank Kingsford and the teams that participated,” said Eric Phares, event organizer of the Hammond Blues & BBQ Challenge. “The event was one of our best yet, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back next year!”

Mike and Barbara Richter and Chris Owen founded the team in 2002, and although 2011 is the team’s first year competing full-time, they entered 25 contests last year. Chix, Swine & Bovine uses both a stick burning smoker and Kingsford Charcoal when preparing their award-winning barbeque.

When he’s not competing on the KCBS circuit, Mike loves to fire up the grill. His favorite grilling recipe is Dizzy Pig’s Raising the Steaks and Cow Lick seasonings mixed together on a rib eye steak, following his own advice, “don’t over cook the meat!”

Further showing their culinary affection for beef, Chix, Swine & Bovine also took home first place in their favorite category, brisket.

Want to see Chix, Swine and Bovine in action? They’ll be making another appearance in the Kingsford Points Chase at Pork in the Park in Salisbury, Md. The event in their home state will be the second of four Kingsford Points Chase events in which the team will compete.
