 SANCTIONING COMMITTEE MEETING

MEMBERS:  Randy Bigler, Co-Chair, Eddie Smith, Mickey Williams, Ron Templeman, Charlie Barrineau, Debbie Yopp, Graham Wilson, Robert Stouffer, Kim Collier, Betty Frizzell, Carolyn Wells, Mike Hays, Carol Bigler

The entire meeting was focusing on the Organizers Guide and its completion.  Committee feels that all updates have been made.  Kim Collier is updating the current guide with all the changes and or additions/deletions.  She will then send it to the Committee.  Sandy will send it to Mike Hays for his review.  After it will be checked for spelling and grammar and then printed.  Our intentions are to have it ready in time for the Banquet in January.   This project has taken several months, it was quite an endeavor and the Committee worked very hard on this project.

The other topic of discussion was the Get Out and Grill Series. Plans are for the November meeting to work on this series and have it ready to present to the Board in December.

Marketing Committee:  Randall Bowman, Chair

There is no official public marketing report this month but a complete update on 2018 partners has been sent to the Executive committee and can be discussed in closed session.

2017 November International Board of Managers Report-Wayne Lohman

We wanted to share with the Board a letter the KCBS International Board of Managers received from the American Ambassador Brent R. Hartley in Slovenia.  We think this is a “well said” example of how American Style of Barbecue is being accepted in other nations around the World.  Ambassador Hartley suggested that we contact U.S. Embassies as we emerge into other countries to let them know we are there and what we are teaching.  This is being considered a Culinary and Cultural exchange among other countries. 

 

 

KCBS CBJ Committee Minutes-Dennis Polson 

KCBS CBJ Committee Meeting       October 30, 2017 7pm CST 

Members Present: Dennis Polson, Chair; Phillip Brazier, Co-Chair; Mile Hays, KCBS President; Linda Polson, Recording Secretary; Frank Gonzales, John Scharffbillig, Bill & Debbie Gage, Marge Plummer, Maxine Kilgore, Carl Parrish, Jon Amedei, Carolyn Wells, KCBS Executive Director; and Sammye Phelps, KCBS Manager Member Services. 

Dennis opened the meeting & reported that he had feedback from judges indicating that they are opposed to being expected to purchase their own 100+ badges. Following discussion, the committee agreed to proceed with the plan for KCBS to provide for badge set-up fee & give judges the option to purchase 100+ badges, if they wish and/or receive a pin, as current practice. 

Dennis requested input for clarification for judges cooking with a team for MCBJ requirement and the committee approved the following wording -” The Contest must have the 4 KCBS meats of chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder, and brisket to be considered as cooking with a Team.”  Dennis will forward the statement to Mike Hays to determine whether it requires BOD approval. 

The committee reviewed the proposed Alternative Responsibilities for Disabled or Handicapped CBJs to Fulfill Master CBJ Requirements. The Committee approved the document with one change. 

The Committee also discussed minimum requirements for a CBJ cooking with a Team for MCBJ requirement, considering both time and tasks. Jon Amedei will make a list of possible tasks & will send it to the Committee. Committee members who believe there should be a minimum time requirement are asked to send recommendations to the committee. Both items will be discussed at the November meeting. 

The Critique form for Judges, TCs & Volunteers was reviewed. Minor changes to the flow of the form were made & the form was approved by the Committee; Dennis will take the form to BOD for approval. 

The next meeting will be November 20th at 7pm CST.   The meeting was adjourned at 7:45pm.

October 31st, 2017 the meeting began at 7:00 PM Central Time

Members present: Dennis Polson, Bill & Debbie Gage, Alan Rothrock, Steve Alvarez, Steve Grin stead, Ralph Williams

Members absent: Mike Eberle, Bob McKinnon, Kim Collier

Prior to the meeting, Committee members had been sent the latest revised version of the Table Captain Meeting script for their review.  After some discussion, a couple of items were added and the script was approved.  It will be sent to the office for posting on the website.

The pre-requisites for becoming a Contest Rep were, briefly, discussed to see if any changes needed to be made.  It was determined that there were none, at this time, but would be looked at further.

A request had been made by a board member to establish ONE procedure for receiving, renumbering, and distributing entries at turn-in.  Various committee members explained, in detail, how they each performed the said duties.  It was agreed upon that while there may be some slight differences in some methods, they all accomplished the same end results.  And that there cannot be ONE set way as each contest presents its own situation where some type of adaptation may be required.

The meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM Central with the next Committee meeting being scheduled for Tuesday November 28th at 7:00 PM Central.

BUILDING COMMITTEE:  Arlie Bragg, Chair 

The lease on the building for the 5000 square-foot is now signed the agent has showed an additional 7000 square-foot to a client we are working through the details of that proposed lease. The front leak on the building has been fixed the elevator contract has been renewed at this time. I also suggest that we purchase some metal poles and reserve parking signs for our staff and maybe four additional spaces for guest

Tech Committee- Mike Peters – Chair

Technology Committee is still working on website proposal process. We plan to follow up with individual committee chairs and office staff concerning processes.

BANQUET MEETING- Sandy Fulton-Chair

Committee Members:  Barbara Richter, Chris Peters, Randy Bigler, Bill Capstack, Karrin Murphy, Carolyn Wells, Kim Collier, Randy & Carol Bigler 

Kim informed us that we have 4 people signed up each day at this point for the tour.

Barbara has sent Request for Proposal to be recommended AV Companies.  Once received, she will review and involve Carolyn in final decision.

Bill Capstack will be involved with Karen to finalize volunteers needed.

Revised diagram sent out.  Travis Clark wants two tables.  We will reserve the first two rows (8 tables) for Sponsors, TOY, Board and VIP’s.  Remaining tables will be re-numbered for website so that members can select their tables in advance.  No changes, other than additional tables at the rear of the room will be changed once the sheet has been published.  Barbara will work with Karen at the Argosy to finalize the diagram, placing table numbers appropriately and forward to Karrin Murphy to be included in the registration.

Update on Sandy working with organizers to secure contest entries for raffle will happen in November meeting.

So far, 6 organizers have sent in photos for slide show.  Karrin is working on obtaining photos for the slide show by other means.

Bill Capstack provided a recap on the menu tasting that took place on October 19th.  He was pleased with the offerings, and confident in their selections.  In his words, “the hotel bent over backwards” to make sure the tasting committee was pleased.  The committee is grateful to Bill for taking on this task, and handling it perfectly!

Time change for the Contest Draw and Trade.  It will take place between 4 and 5 instead of 4:30 and 5:30 to allow time for staff and attendees to get ready for the banquet.  Cutoff time for raffle tickets will be 2:00PM on Saturday instead of 3:00PM

Next meeting takes place Tuesday November 28th at 10AM Central Time

Rules Committee:   Mike Richter

The Rules Committee met October 17th. Several items were discussed including the existing burger rules and a recent backyard participant issue. The review of the burger rules will be completed and any proposed changes submitted to the Board for consideration during the December meeting. The next committee meeting is November 21.

Below are the goals established by the Board during the February planning meeting for the Rules Committee.

The nominations are closed we have 10 candidates running for the board of which six have turned in the required answers to the questions

Have reached out to potential adviser/consultant to see if they would consider helping us with the process. No answer yet.

I would like to make a motion that the word average on the KCBS scoring scale be defined as fast food level cooking.

Nominations for the Gary Wells Sportsmanship Award and the Carolyn Wells Ambassador Award are being accepted at this time. Nomination period ends December 1, 2017 for each award.
