The 2013 Smithfield® Rib Super Series kicked off its 2013 season with a bang! The first event in the Super Series was held at the Best of the Basin Barbecue Championship in Midland, TX where barbecue competitors flocked to the competition grounds to stake their claim for BBQ glory. A whopping 56 of the 59 total teams competing at the event tried their luck with a couple of FREE racks of ribs compliments of Smithfield. A giant cheer to Junior Urias of Juniors Up in Smoke who stole the rib show and wrangled first place in the rib category and a bonus $500 from Smithfield.
Juniors Up in Smoke is a relatively fresh barbecue team. While having only competed professionally for three years, the team isn’t a bunch of greenhorns they boast eight years of amateur practice, which has undoubtedly contributed to their recent successes.
For Juniors Up in Smoke, this was their first time to compete in the Smithfield Rib Super Series. And what better way to commemorate their first entry than with a first place finish in Ribs!
“I knew they were excellent ribs,” said Junior Urias, head pitmaster for Juniors Up in Smoke. Come competition time, Junior’s first impressions of Smithfield ribs remained true.
“The ratio between fat and meat was great,” said Urias. “Just enough fat to keep the meat tender and juicy.”
For those wondering, Urias pre-soaks his ribs in a special mix the night before and then seasons his ribs in the morning with Junior’s Rub for Grub – a product specially manufactured for their team.
Looking forward to the rest of the barbecue competition season, Urias notes the team very well may enter in to an additional Rib Super Series competition.
