January Marketing Report:

In summary, the KCBS IOTeam reviews 2013 as a very exciting and productive year. The team traveled over 44,000 miles, visited 8 different countries, several more than once, conducted 6 sanctioned contests, and instructed 6 CBJ classes in countries such as Denmark, Estonia, England, Holland, Germany and Canada. Today, our International Membership totals 346 members in 22 countries as far north of Kansas City as Sweden, south as South Africa, west as Australia and east as the Ukraine.

KCBS International was fortunate to have Mayco and Marianne van Galen, based in the Netherlands, joins us as our first International Reps. They will be instrumental in establishing and developing new contests throughout Europe where they are well known by teams, judges, and organizers. They have been in attendance at every CBJ class and contest that the IOTeam has held in Europe.

2014 brings a lot of challenges and excitement for the IOTeam as we have bbq event discussions on- going in 23 countries, 10 contests sanctioned for the year so far and the addition of two new reps in the UK. In addition, we are reviewing the legal aspect of establishing KCBS Chapters outside the US in such locations as Scandinavia, Netherlands and the Caribbean. For example, locations in the Caribbean would include Puerto Rico, Bahamas (already scheduled and sanctioned), Dominion Republic, Antigua and Aruba. We also expect to conduct teaching classes in new countries to KCBS such as South Africa, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand where there is a strong interest in the American way of cooking “low and slow”.

Education committee

Articles regarding Kids Ques and Backyard contests have been sent for publication in the upcoming issue of The Bullsheet. These articles are attached. Thanks to information from KCBS contest reps and some of the organizers, we've found there are over 30 Kids Ques and the same number of Backyard contests across the U.S. With support from teams and organizers, these two sectors of the barbecue community are important to our members and can ensure continued growth for KCBS. I suggest that one of the KCBS office staff be given the responsibility to keep a record of the Kids Ques and Backyard contests so anyone interested in participating in them have someone to contact as these events continue to increase.

In order to encourage the growth of Kids Ques and Backyard contests, I suggest we facilitate a way for organizers to indicate, possibly on their sanctioning agreement, that they plan to hold a Kids Que and/or Backyard contest, and that announcements of and the scores of these contents appear on the KCBS website and in The Bullsheet

I move that the directive that Contest Reps will be terminated if they accept or enjoy a beverage containing alcohol while working a contest be rescinded, and replace it with the following directive that covers ANY inappropriate behavior:

From the time a contest rep arrives at an event site and until he/she departs the site after completion of the event, he/she is expected to conduct him/herself in a professional manner befitting his/her position as a representative of the Kansas City Barbeque Society. If, after investigation, a contest representative's conduct is deemed by the Board as inappropriate, that rep will be reprimanded and/or terminated as determined by the Board.

On a personal note as I complete six years of serving on the KCBS board, I would like to thank the many members of KCBS who have given me their encouragement through the years and to commend the board members with whom I've served for their diligence and passion for the Kansas City Barbeque Society. I commend Candy Weaver for the three years she has lead the board as an exceptional and dedicated President, and especially thank her for her support and input during my tenure as Secretary. And, above all, I give special thanks to Carolyn Wells, for the many years she has supported me as both a mentor and friend.

I ask the board to accept this report as submitted

Common senses/unwritten rules

Some examples are. To have a file or note book for all contest that you rep. For Documenting contacts date, team update, ect….

Change the Alternate number for each contest. With the new Score program there is no reason to use the same Alt. number

Be sure to order supplies in advance so they can be shipped ground. Expedited shipping is very expensive.

I would like to make a motion that following New competition Cook pamphlet be approved for the Reps to hand out.

Mark Simmons

Strategic Planning Committee

Annual Summary for 2013

1/14/2014

This year’s committee consisted of Mark Simmons (Chairman), Carolyn Wells (ex-officio), Candy Weaver (ex-officio), Wayne Lohman, and Paul Kirk. Averaging more than one meeting per month, this committee has worked very hard to look at a number of strategic issues related to the Kansas City BBQ Society.

Although motions were not routinely brought before the board of directors due to the fact that many of the issues involve quite in depth discussions and insight, the committee was very helpful and I think enjoyed taking the long look ahead.

The intent of the committee was to look at future needs of the KCBS that will probably surface due to our consistent growth year in and year out. We talked about infrastructure, marketing, philanthropy, among other things.

The committee’s first consideration was a discussion revolving around a permanent home for KCBS. Knowing we do not speak for the Board, only the BOD can do that, we considered various options but came to no conclusions to bring before the Board. The prevailing opinion of the committee was that since we are the Kansas City BBQ Society, and our permanent home should be in Kansas City. This discussion included the recommendation to purchase our existing facility which was accomplished. Knowing that a move will be a long term project, probably at least a year and possibly longer, we do feel that this is a matter to be settled in the reasonable future.

We established initiatives that we wanted to discuss. We discussed initiatives on possible ways to recruit additional cooks, talked about developing a systematic description of ways to engage the public at KCBS events, how we could advance the marketing of KCBS and lend our wholehearted support to a “Big Event” to raise the exposure and awareness of KCBS across the country, what could be done to advance the international aspect of KCBS, how can we advance the backyard competitions across the country, and the importance of developing a philosophy that guides our decisions for the future.

I believe in the strategic planning function. The strategic plan for KCBS would be one where all the Board members are engaged and have the opportunity to offer their input. We hope that the Board will set that as one of their priorities in the future.

It was our pleasure to serve you.

Don Harwell

CBJ Committee Report

For the year 2013, sixty six Certified Barbeque Judging (CBJ) classes were taught in 2013, five of those being international (Denmark, England, Estonia, Germany, and the Netherlands). From these classes, 2841 people have received certification from KCBS to be Barbeque Judges. Also, within these classes, we had 1972 of these people being new KCBS members.

KCBS has also had 22 Certified Table Captain (CTC) Classes with a total of 317 students.

I would like to thank the CBJ Committee for all that has taken place in 2013. The members of this committee have had great input in each of our monthly meeting and providing guidance to the Board of Directors.

I again want to thank the KCBS office and Sammye Phelps for all the hard work in 2013 making the CBJ portion of KCBS, my role, and monthly reports easier.

No CBJ Committee meeting was held before this report.

Dave Compton

Philanthropy Committee

We have posted in the BullSheet the applications for Grants and Grants in Aid. There is an e-blast going out Wednesday, January 15th reminding members about the applications and also to vote. The response so far has been slow but it should pick up this month.

I have enjoyed being on the Philanthropy committee for the last two years and I wish the next committee the best of luck.

Old/New Business

Candy Weaver

I move that for KCBS Team of the Year points all contests are eligible if the four criteria meats are cooked regardless of whether the contest has specific modification of garnish or other standard KCBS rules.

There is a novel concept on the table in California that prompts this motion. B2BBQ is a competitor series where for an entry fee of $400 all meat is provided. The provided meats will be KCBS-eligible meats. Part of the contest rules is that you cook the meat provided. This pushes this contest concept to a competitor series with no team recognition. CBBQA is giving points, shouldn't KCBS?
