Las Vegas Regional Final PreviewApril 25, 2014
The street address for the Sam’s Club location in Las Vegas hosting this weekend’s Region 4 Final is 1910 E. Serene. With the smoke billowing and the best out west fighting for a coveted spot at the National Championship Finals in Bentonville, the scene in Vegas will be anything but “serene.”
Qualifying events for Las Vegas occurred over the months of March and April. Five local events from out west have fed the Vegas event: Tucson, Sacramento, Seattle (Renton), Salt Lake City and Denver. Now the 30 best competitors will wage Q-war in the desert and 10 will emerge as National Championship finalists.
Out of the Tucson event, Loot N’ Booty BBQ emerged victorious with almost a 10 point spread between Grand and Reserve at that event.
From Arizona, the tour continued on its westward way over to Sacramento, Calif. Some of California’s toughest teams showed up, bringing the heat along with them. Big B’s Down-N-Dirty BBQ, with a score of 662.8116, claimed the rights to the Grand Champion title, along with a top ten call in each of the categories. Harry Soo’s Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ placed 3rd in Sacramento and will be considered among the favorites to advance from Vegas.
Moving up the Pacific coast to Washington, the Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour made its presence known in Renton. Despite Washington’s famous rain, the teams magnificently displayed the art of que. Showing off their skills, Bad Bones BBQ took home the Grand Champion. Notable Midwestern team, Scottie Johnson’s cancersuckschicago.com found themselves out west for this event and a Top Five finish far away from home.
Miles above sea level, the Sam’s Tour rolled into Salt Lake City where R&R BBQ took home the GC after having a huge day finishing in the top four in all categories. Rhythm N’ Que came away with Reserve in SLC, but it wasn’t close as R&R finished nearly 11 points better than second place.
The last Region Four local took place in Denver last weekend. GQue stole the show while nabbing a category win in Pork and finishing second overall in Brisket. The Brisket category turned out to be a perfect score win for Smokin Hot Butts BBQ who placed third overall and will be competing this weekend in Vegas.
After just a quick scan of the teams involved it’s pretty easy to see that some high stakes BBQ action is set to go down tomorrow in Vegas. The best in the west (and some other areas) will be squaring off for big cash prizes and 10 coveted spots in Bentonville. If you’re in the Las Vegas area, make sure to join us tomorrow for the only national tournament of its kind; the Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour.
