OKIEQ & Smokeaholics Take Top Spots in Shawnee, OKApril 7, 2016
Stop #1 for the OKBS Team of the Year Contest was the 4th Annual Firelake BBQ Cookoff in Shawnee. Sanctioned by KCBS, this event is fast becoming a team favorite. Jason Boyce and his Firelake family bend over backwards to accommodate teams and ensure they raise plenty of money for the Shawnee Salvation Army. KCBS Reps Jonathan & Clara Williams, along with Forrest Bruce, laid out the rules and schedule for the weekend on Friday night at the cook's meeting, and then teams were treated to pizza for dinner. This was the first cook of the season for many teams so Friday night was spent catching up, but by Saturday morning it was game on. 66 teams came to compete for the first Grand Championship in Oklahoma of the 2016 BBQ season. Among them were many OKBS and KCBS 2015 top ten teams, three new teams to competition barbecue, and some not-so-new but up-and-coming teams that everyone is watching out for.
One of those teams just so happened to walk away with the win in Shawnee. Billy Durossette and the OKIEQ team from Muskogee took 3rd in Chicken, 10th in Ribs, 22nd in Pork and 2nd in Brisket along with the top spot. This was the 3rd Grand Championship for OKIEQ in the past 11 months and they are definitely the team to watch. Troy Burkhart and the Smokeaholics team from Hayes, Kansas won Reserve Grand Champion bringing home 16th in Chicken, 9th in Ribs, 1st place in Pork with a perfect 180, and 20th in Brisket.
KCBS handed out a perfect score and 1st place in Brisket to Buffalo's BBQ, while 1st place in Chicken went to Squeal Like A Pig BBQ and 1st place in Ribs went to TNK BBQ. The top ten were (1) OKIEQ, (2) Smokeaholics, (3) Caveman Cuisine, (4) Uncle BC's, (5) Skinny's BBQ, (6) Clark Crew BBQ, (7) Jambo Pits, (8) Buffalo's BBQ, (9) Butcher BBQ, and (10) Squeal Like A Pig BBQ.
The 2016 competitive BBQ season is officially underway. The Firelake BBQ Cookoff is looking to expand next year with a double header, so mark it down now for 2017. With 17 sanctioned contests in Oklahoma alone it's going to be a busy year for teams, judges and organizers alike. Congratulations to GC OKIEQ and RGC Smokeaholics. What a great way to start the season!
