River City Roundup

October 1, 2008
The River City Roundup in Omaha was quite a fun time. The BBQ event was held in conjunction with the Rodeo at the Qwest Center. There were 40+ teams and the smoke was wafting all over the parking lots.

Friday night was the people's choice cookoff where the teams cooked pork tenderloin for the crowd with all the proceeds going to support the local 4-H club. They raised over $1700.

As we walked around the crowded contest area, we got to see a number of different cookers and lots of different ways to cook tenderloin. The team that had the open jar of jam was the most intriguing one... I'll have to look up that recipe.

As we were meeting the teams, we saw a bottle of "Blues Hog" sauce that a team was selling. Just this week, we saw a video of Bill Arnold who invented the Blues Hog sauce on Good Morning America and recalled that this is the sauce used by some championship teams. I hope to run into Bill somewhere down the road and let him know what a wonderful taste he has captured in a bottle!

We hung out for quite a while and enjoyed the socializing that comes along with BBQ. I think that I have a "new" favorite team name - this team has three guys named Ron on it and their team name is "Three Rons make it right".  I thought that was so original!  We met the Plowboys who ended up as reserve grand champions and took home a really cool branding iron and branded cutting board as their trophy. They also make and sell their rubs - must be pretty good to win the RGC!

One special perk at this event was each winner got to have their picture taken with not one, not two, but FOUR Rodeo Queens!!! Yup, good BBQ is not the only perk of BBQ events.

Heading to the Biggest BBQ event on the planet next week - the American Royal BBQ event in Kansas City!!  Hope to meet up with some of the teams that we have met along the way and visit with some new ones.
