Who: Great American BBQ Tour
What: Safeway National Capitol Barbecue Battle
When: June 25-26
Where: Pennsylvania Ave. between 9th and 14th Washington, D.C.
The Great American BBQ Tour is hitting the road again to share tips and techniques of competitive barbeque with backyard grilling and barbeque enthusiasts throughout the country.
The fourth annual Kansas City Barbeque Society Great American BBQ Tour continues its tradition of educating and sharing great barbeque tips and techniques at barbeque competitions and festivals across the country, including the Safeway National Capitol Barbecue Battle.
“The Safeway National Capitol Barbecue Battle is truly one of the great events in the country, and we’re excited to bring the Tour to Washington,” said Carolyn Wells, executive director and co-founder of KCBS. “The Safeway National Capitol Barbecue Battle represents what we love so much about barbeque: an opportunity for people to come together and enjoy ‘America’s Cuisine.’”
The cross-country tour features the husband-and-wife team of Mike and Christine Peters, who share grilling tips and tasty food samples with event attendees.
During the tour stop, attendees will have the opportunity to compete to see who is the master of the grill. Two lucky audience members are chosen for a Grill Master cook-off. Participants are tasked with cooking a piece of chicken with Weber Seasonings and Kingsford Charcoal.
Using the official cooker of the tour, Good-One Smokers/Grills, as well as the tour’s official grilling accessory, Grate Chef, the participants are judged by the audience on the KCBS standards of appearance, taste and texture. In addition to claiming the title of Grill Master, the winner will also receive a prize pack loaded with grilling essentials from KCBS and the tour partners.
Event attendees will also get to sample grilled chicken wings from Tyson and potato salad from Reser’s Fine Foods.
In addition to the food sampling and entertainment for event attendees, the Great American BBQ Tour also offers some additional benefits to the teams competing in the barbeque contest.
National tour partner, Kingsford Charcoal, is hosting a points chase. The Kingsford Points Chase offers teams cooking with Kingsford Charcoal the chance to compete for additional prize money at the event and an overall grand champion prize purse of $25,000. It’s estimated that more than 5,000 teams compete on the KCBS barbeque circuit. With more than 15,000 members, KCBS has been sanctioning events and training certified barbeque judges nationwide for more than 20 years. Using an objective, blind judging process, the society sanctions approximately 400 barbeque competitions throughout the nation each year.
