LUNCHMEAT
Year Started: 2004Members:
TERRI SULLIVAN
MIKE SULLIVAN
Gary and Mike mentored with Garry Howard of The Smoke Ring in 2003 and to this day we thank him for everything he taught us about BBQ and how to have fun while cooking it.
lunchmeat's first contest was the 2004 Snowshoe Grilling Challenge in February, and after getting a call in three categories, ended up in third place overall. There was no turning back...
From 2004 to 2006, lunchmeat seemed destined to 'always be a bridesmaid', winning eleven Reserve Grand Championships in that time.
In 2005 they were named the New England BBQ Society's Rib Team Of The Year.
In 2006, they won their first Grand Championship at Oinktoberfest in Clarence NY.
2007 saw lunchmeat take on the best of New England and beyond and win it all at the Harpoon New England Championships in Windsor VT. Then they went back to Clarence NY and were named Grand Champions of Oinktoberfest for the second time.
2008 brought more success with a Grand Championship in Yardley PA and the three-peat at Oinktoberfest. On a roll, lunchmeat went down to Tennessee to compete with the best in the World at 'the Jack'. This event ended with them bringing home a 2nd place Jack Daniel's trophy for brisket, and finishing an amazing 5th place overall.
2009 NEBS Team of the Year - 2nd place pork, 2nd place brisket
When they are not competing, lunchmeat is busy, happily lending a hand with many BBQ-related events including New England BBQ Society cooking schools and KCBS judging classes. They are heavily involved with numerous New England BBQ Society charitable events throughout the year, including the 'Harpoon Helps Pre-Thanksgiving Beer-B-Que' which raises thousands of dollars for the Greater Boston Food Bank every year; the Snowshoe Grilling Challenge, which benefits the Abington Food Pantry; Grillin' On The Bay, which benefits the St. Mark's school sports program; and "Bedford Feeds The Troops", which feeds the men and women who are serving or who have already served our great country.
lunchmeat has mentored people new to BBQ, as they were mentored when they started out. We feel the need to 'pay it forward', as they say, and we try to show others the joy of competition BBQ.
If you are ever at a competition and hear the call - BAHHHH B QUE!!!! - you'll know that we are there. Come on over and say hi, we'd love to meet you!
