BIG D'S FIREHOUSE SMOKERS

Year Started: 2008
Members:
JULIE EVANS
DANNY EVANS

Danny Evans or "Big D" as referred to by his friends, started barbequing back in 1977 out of necessity to raise money for a fledging fire department in Marshallville, Ga. Evans, along with many volunteer members of the Marshallville Fire Department, started barbecuing chickens that was given to the dept. on credit by the local Red & White. MFD was able to make thousands of dollars with these fundraisers, enabling MFD to purchase add addional trucks, tankers and other needed equipment. After years of chicken cooking the MFD started cooking Boston Butts, hand pulling the barbecue they sold. The local school lunchroom employees volunteer after hours to help make the Brunswick stew, the old fashion way with the hog heads. The plates were always sold out by the end of the day.
Big D and fellow aviator-close friend Bill Lavender battled over the years experimenting with ribs, pork and chicken. Both always felt like they won!
Evans continued over the years cooking for large parties, as gifts to friends at Christmas and large Fourth of July Events.
With the opening of a family owned restaurant with wife Julie, Big D started serving his Award winning chili at Leta's on the Square. With the chili being so popular, Big D started smoking butts occasionally for the restaurant. After several weeks of cooking on his old smoker, Evans purchased a smoker from Stump's Smokers. "With the addition of Stump's smoker we are able to cook with much more consistence than before, Said Evans".
In 2008, Evans started venturing out with his barbecue catering several large events and fundraisers. Not long after that Evans entered a Georgia Barbecue Association Cook Off under the name Big D's Firehouse Smokers. Big D's walked with 2nd place ribs. That got us hooked, said Evans. Big D's continued competition in the GBA and MBN placing in many categories and winning a first place in Sauce.
Big D's biggest finish to date was getting in the Finials in the Rib category at The Big Pig Jig in 2009 finishing 3rd out of 109 teams (MBN).
Big D's Firehouse Smokers competed in several KCBS events in the 2011 season.Picking up a 5th place chicken at Oconee BBQ Fest.
