Year Started: 2011

Keith "KC" Pelkey has been cooking BBQ competitively for 5 years. His start came from his love of BBQ and a lot of prodding from his neighbor and mentor Mike Cartechine (Giggling Pigs). After a few competitions, Keith and his cooking partner Gerry Burke took a third place overall in only their 4th contest (Oinktoberfest 2011). The season oppener in 2012, the Roc City Rib Fest found Keith and Gerry back in the top 5 taking their first RGC. After a rocky finish at the Brews, Blues and BBQ Comp in Wilson, NY Keith and Gerry came back and finished 4th at the Boston Hills BBQ Fest, their home town competition. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Gerry had to leave the team and Keith finished the 2012 season on his own. It was a rough start to being solo as the only call at the Hudson Valley Rib Fest was for chicken. The rest of the days turn ins didn't fair well with the judges. After taking a few weeks off to regroup, Keith went on to Oinktoberfest, and with the help of his sister Tanya and soon-to-be brother-in-law Matt, he got calls in 3/4 categories and won his first ever GC. In 2013 Keith picked up a new cooking partner, Angelo "AJ" Caruana. That year saw the new duo compete in 5 comps. Roc City (31/80); Podunk Pig Party (9/20); Brews, Blues and BBQ (21/31); Boston Hills BBQ Fest (4/49); and Oinktoberfest (18/71). They had a strong year and could have won multiple GC's if it weren't for the pork category. That became the achilles heal for the team. It was also an exciting September for the team as they got a bung for the Jack Daniel's World Championship. Unfortunately the team didn't get their bung drawn but it was fun time nonetheless. 2014 brought a break in the action with Keith going solo for Roc City finishing 20th out of 86 teams and taking home a 1st place chicken entry, missing a perfect score by .56 points. 2015 marks the comeback tour for KC and the Smokeshack Band as they are entered into the Roc City Rib Fest, Brews, Blues and BBQ, and are looking at Hudson Valley Rib Fest, Oinktoberfest, KC and AJ are also going to be cooking Take a Soldier Fishing Day, an event where military personnel are taken out fishing for a fun filled day of fishing and food prepared by the KCBS sanctioned teams who wish to do more than compete. Many of the top finishers in NY & Canada will be there to support our men and women who serve and sacrifice each day so that we may enjoy the freedoms our country offers.
