We started our competition barbecue adventure in 2003 with a trip to Memphis, TN and high hopes of eating some of the world's best barbecue at the Memphis In May Barbecue Contest. We were quick to learn that the teams weren't there to feed the public and unless you had an inside connection you weren't likely to get to sample the "good stuff".
In the spring of 2004 we completed the Memphis Barbecue Network (MBN) Judging requirements and judged our first MBN contest in Tunica, MS. After judging MBN barbecue contests for almost three years, we longed for something more.
In 2006 we became judges for Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) and also competed in our first KCBS sanctioned contest as cooks. Although we didn't come in last place, we were close and I had the bitter taste of defeat lingering on my pallet. It did not matter I was hooked on competition barbecue.
Since 2006 we've competed in about a 15 KCBS sanctioned contests, and a few Illinois BBQ Society (ILBBQS) and St. Louis BBQ Society (SLBS) events.
