BIG CREEK BBQ

Year Started: 2005
Members:
JEFF STITH
TAMMY STITH

Big Creek BBQ was formed in 2005 with Jeff Stith, a life-long Missouri resident, and Hank Smits cooking together. Their first event was the American Royal, finishing 400th out of 475 teams. A week later at De Soto, Kansas, they finished 15th out of approximately 35 teams.

In 2006, Hank opted not to continue to cook so that he could concentrate on his career and Jeff's wife Tammy, originally from Michigan, came on board. That year, barbeque contests became family events as daughter Taylor started cooking in Kids Q contests. Big Creek competed in eleven contests in 2006 with five top ten finishes.

During 2007, Big Creek entered twelve events and had six top ten finishes, highlighted by Reserve Grand Champion at Blue Springs, Missouri. Stan Hays, also of Pleasant Hill, came on board to help out the team for several contests in 2007 and cooked a first place brisket at Garden City, Missouri.

During 2008, Big Creek BBQ brought onboard Lee Keith from Sloppy's Backwoods BBQ for the Warrensburg, Missouri contest and took Grand Champion as "Sloppy Creek BBQ". This earned them an invitation to the American Royal where the Invitational was not a big success but Sloppy Creek finished 24th overall in the Open.

Hometown: Pleasant Hill, Missouri
State: MO
Country: US

Most wins in a year: Six

Biggest Wins: Big Creek BBQ earned its first Grand Championship in May, 2010 at Platte City, Missouri in the Legacy Cup BBQ at Basswood Resort. They followed that up two weeks later by winning Grand Champion at the Great American BBQ Open Contest in Bonner Springs, Kansas. In June of 2010, Big Creek earned its third Grand, this time in Independence, Kansas. The incredible year of 2010 continued with a fourth Grand Championship at Glasgow, Missouri in July. After a couple of close finishes in August and September, Big Creek notched their fifth Grand Championship of the year at Golden City, Missouri in October. A December trip to Alabama scored Big Creek BBQ win number six on the year. In addition, Big Creek earned 180 perfect score pins in consecutive weeks in June, 2010, receiving a 180 in pork at Huron, South Dakota and then in chicken at Raytown, Missouri. Cooking as Sloppy Creek BBQ (with Lee Keith of Sloppy's Backwoods BBQ), the team won Grand Champion at Warrensburg, Missouri in 2008 (1st in chicken and pork and 6th in ribs and brisket). We came within a half point of Grand Champion at Blue Springs in 2007, finishing as Reserve Grand Champion. We have taken several first place awards in categories, including chicken and brisket numerous times, pork twice and ribs once. Most exciting for us, however, are wins by our daughter, Taylor. She was Kids Q Grand Champion for the 5-10 age group at Laurie, MO in 2006 and Sedalia, MO in 2007. During 2008, Taylor was 3rd place (out of 41 entries) in the Great American BBQ Kids Q and also finished 3rd in her hometown of Pleasant Hill, even though in this one, she was inadvertantly entered in the 11-15 age group. She took her third Kids Q Grand Championship at Warrensburg, MO as well. She has topped that accomplishment in 2009, winning first place in both categories at Sedalia to take the Grand Champion honor of the 5-10 age group, her fourth win in four years.
