LA LUNA BBQYear Started: 2017
At the moment, my team consists of just myself. So far I have had friends and family assist me during competition. I have been smoking meat for over a decade, but only recently started competing. I also attended culinary school, which has given me a solid foundation from which to start. My experience in smoking started when I lived in Alaska, catching and smoking as much salmon and halibut as I had time for. I have been cooking since I was a kid, and have always had a natural ability to pair flavors, and turn out great food just by following my instincts instead of recipes. Lucky for me the same gift has translated into BBQ which has become my true and deepest cooking passion. I enjoy trying new things, and experimenting with different types of meats and veggies, or really anything you can put into a smoker. I prefer BBQ that combines influences from all regional BBQ traditions, but I love each of them individually for their own unique qualities. After attending a KCBS event as a spectator a couple of years ago I was hooked on the BBQ world from that moment on. A KCBS judge class appeared near me so I jumped right on in and it has all escalated rapidly since, and grows exponentially with each event I attend no matter the capacity I attend in. My team name was inspired by the Pixar short film of the same name, which is, as you can imagine, my favorite such film, so I figured I'd give the name to my favorite "hobby".
