2012 Tour Stop #15 - Blues, Brews & BarbecueAugust 17, 2012
Blues, Brews & Barbecue
Birch Run, Mich.
After the long days at the Wisconsin State Fair, Christine and I were due a little R & R and what better way to relax than cook a contest?? Since we had a retail stop in Woodbury, Minn. we were close enough to hit the Med City BBQ contest in Rochester. For a third year contest, they seemed to have a good grasp on putting on a top notch contest. Christine and I didn't embarrass ourselves either and walked away with a 6th place chicken call and 17th overall out of a tough field of teams.
The Blues, Brews & Barbecue contest in Birch Run, Mich. was the next stop for the Great American BBQ Tour and we pulled into town early and dropped the trailer at the event site. This same weekend, Birch Run also hosted the Vietnam Moving Wall, a small scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., which brought additional people to the area.
This was the first year for the Blues, Brews and Barbecue contest and they had 30 teams from the United States and Canada attend. Bub-Ba-Q from Georgia even made the trek to the North to chase the win! The blues music drew the crowds on Friday night and gave us a good crowd attendance for our demonstrations and samplings. One younger lady who tried my Smithfield® Pork Loin with the Weber® Just Add Juice™ Caribbean Juice recipe told her friend that it was, "ten times better than her mother's cooking!"… Kind of interesting that it wasn't twice as good or way better
than, but 10 times better. I put the credit back to the pork and the recipe and slipped her a packet of seasoning to take home with her!
I have to share that shows just how special our BBQ community is and why we are so thankful to be part of this BBQ family. Danielle (Diva Q) made the trip south from Canada and as she pulled into the event, it was clear that her trailer was past due for new tires. Three of the four tires were bad with one especially close to horrible. She had tried to get them changed but that is a different story altogether. One of the guys from the local Bavarian Smoke BBQ team brought over his jack and took her bad tire off to get replaced. On Saturday at awards, that good Karma paid off as Bavarian Smoke BBQ was called for Grand Champion! Big Brothers BBQ won Reserve while Diva Q headed home with a 3rd place overall along with 1st place in Brisket!
