1 - Why do you want to be a member of the KCBS Board of Directors?

I love promoting BBQ as the American cuisine and understand it is a way of life. I think KCBS is losing some of that vision as we embrace BBQ as a sport and there is no reason these two pursuits cannot coexist. Bringing the fun and camaraderie back among all participants (organizers, sponsors, Contest Representatives, cooks, judges, and spectators) will be my constant focus and I believe I can bring a sense of balance to the Board.

2 – Identify the major areas (Cook, Judge, Organizer, Rep or Backyard Cook) in which you are involved.

I understand the importance of all roles in competition BBQ and have had the opportunity of working with all positions. I have engaged with a couple of different cook teams numerous times over the years but spend most of my time serving as a judge (which includes all activities in the judging process) or Contest Representative. I am fortunate to have been a part of contests in 21 states as well as in Puerto Rico and, the diversity of regions, yet the similarity across borders makes BBQ a truly American experience that is appreciated globally. I will continue to promote KCBS as THE American cuisine and the ambassador of BBQ while serving as your Board representative.

3 – Identify your major short-term goal and the major long-term goal, if elected to the Board of KCBS and your plan to implement change or improvement in order to carry out each of these goals.

My short-term goal to bring fun and friendship back into focus. Cooks who spend countless hours perfecting their craft as well as literally spending thousands of dollars to compete and judges who expend time and money to travel to help promote BBQ have the same goal and need to embrace each other. KCBS should serve as a unifying force to facilitate cooperation between these two equally important groups. My long-term goal is to help find sponsors who can help local organizers host competitions in a financially responsible manner. KCBS needs to be a partner that teaches and assists new organizers to be successful so that all competitions can grow. In addition, I really want to bring transparency back regarding the board activities. With very few exceptions, the board meetings should be open to all of KCBS and I would like to return to that platform.

4 – The KCBS Board of Directors is a working board that spends 10-20 hours and possibly more per month in furthering the mission of KCBS depending on your role as a member of the board. If elected, please explain “Your level of Commitment, Time and Energy“ in your role as a director.

I have treasured my role as a homemaker over the past 25 years and am so proud of my children who are successful and happy. My sons are active Navy and my daughter is a successful manager in the private sector. Now that my children have moved on, I am able to dedicate more time as a director and an Ambassador for BBQ. For those of you who know me, you will agree I am a dedicated and energetic individual who will continue to travel to contests and be available to listen to members in various regions to bring their ideas forward. For those of you who don’t know me, I would like to get to know you!

5 – List how you have participated in KCBS and for how long?

I took my CBJ class in 2008 and have judged BBQ all over the country as well as Puerto Rico. I stopped counting the contests I’ve judged or volunteered at 196, but haven’t stopped there. In 2018, I was recommended to become a Contest Representative and have continued to judge, volunteer and rep at every opportunity.

6 – What skills do you possess that might help the KCBS Board of Directors in its mission, ie, Accounting, Legal, Marketing, etc.? How do you see using these skills as a KCBS Board of Director member?

My work experience in banking operations taught me the importance of meeting deadlines, assuring accuracy and being reliable. These aspects are very important in running a successful BBQ competition and should be expected in every level including: KCBS support of the organizer, providing needed facilities for teams and judges, providing excellence in both cooking and judging and guaranteeing accuracy in scoring. My experience in banking and as a homemaker will promote cooperation and respect among all participants. My marketing knowledge, as well as the ability to read and comprehend financial reports will provide a solid skill set to promote the mission of KCBS in an equitable and fiscally responsible manner.
