Great American Cookout - Westmont, IL

Share this article:
June 8, 2017

After some time off to see our youngest daughter graduate and celebrate our youngest grandson’s birthday, Christine and I hit the road for Westmont, Il and the Red, White and Barbeque event. While we have spent many years in the area at the Naperville Ribfest, this is our first time in Westmont. Knowing some of the residents, I was concerned about our safety but driving to Ty Warner Park, yes the TY Beanie Baby guy, and passing the Maserati, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW and Audi dealers, I was much less concerned about possible riffraff in the area.

Since we also promote at retail stops in-between festivals, we set up at a couple Ace Hardware stores in the Western Suburbs to sample Cowboy Charcoal, Grillmate hot dogs and sausages, Western Wood and they even stocked Cowboy BBQ sauce which can normally be purchased online.

Friday was pretty much a washout but there were still some die-hards that came out to the event. Saturday was a Chamber of Commerce kind of day with beautiful weather! Sunday looked like storms but they went around Westmont and it really was a nice day!

The event had a carnival for the kids, bands, plenty of vendors and both a Professional and backyard division. With some other events cancelling on Memorial Day weekend, quite a few heavy hitters and a couple semi-retired teams showed up to compete at the double header!

Old Virginia Smoke was probably the furthest team competing and won the chicken category for the first day. Billy Ray BBQ won ribs while Grey Street BBQ won pork. With a 180, semi-retired team Cancersuckschicago.com won the brisket category! Billy Ray BBQ won Grand by a little over one point over Old Virginia Smoke!

On day two, Kalamazoo Pit Posse won chicken and Contagious Q won ribs. Dirt Road BBQ won’t the coin toss with Pig Daddy for first place pork and Tim’s Full Belli Deli won brisket. Dirt Road BBQ won Reserve Grand while Old Virginia Smoke didn’t leave any doubt (point and a half) on who had the best BBQ in Westmont and I am sure that the long drive home was much easier taking home all the Illinois money and hardware!
