Great American Cookout - Apex, NC

June 19, 2017

This current East coast run for the Great American Cookout Tour is loaded with first time events for Christine and myself. Westmont, Uncasville, New Castle and this week, Apex North Carolina! North Carolina has always been good to us with great crowds of BBQ loving folks! Tryon, Charlotte, Franklin, Newport, Rocky Mount, Lincolnton, Lexington have all hosted the GAC Tour and we had no doubt that Apex would not disappoint!

This is the 6th year for the Peak City Pig Fest presented by Apex Sunrise Rotary club. There is no charge to attend the festival which has live music, beer garden, street vendors and pig races on Saturday. On Friday night, there was music, beer garden and BBQ dinners served to the crowds! Because the event is held on Salem street, the city closes down the street at 6am. Since we were placed on the street, that meant Christine and I had an early Friday night and had to set our alarms for early thirty on Saturday. We had an easy load-in and had everything set up before the crowds started coming through. We thought it was busy until about 5 minutes before the first pig race which was right across the intersection from us. When the old guy in the walker was running to catch the races, we knew it would be a great day for samples! Friday had over 2 inches of rain and at one point through the day Saturday, the skies opened up and the rain came down hard and heavy but that didn’t keep the crowds away for long! By the end of the day, the sun came back out and we gave out all our product samples of Grillmate Seasoning, Cowboy Sauce and Bubba burgers in addition to hundreds of coupons and recipe cards!

Because we were at the other end of the event, Christine and I were unable to attend the awards ceremony but were excited when we checked the winners to see that Redneck Scientific won chicken and pork and Smokin Skullies won ribs. Evel Que-Nievel won brisket. With three top ten calls, The Smokehouse Mafia won Reserve Grand and with four calls, Old Colony Smokehouse won Grand Champion!

Apex was our last event on the road before we head back home to Springfield for reloading, maintenance, Dr appointments, grand babies  and sleeping in our own bed for a couple nights!
