A Call to all Cooks

May 31, 2018

The Certified BBQ Judge committee would like to put together a list of Cooks, from coast to coast and border to border, willing to have judges work with their Team at a contest.  These Judges might be working on their Masters or may already be Master Certified Judges and want to refresh their skills outside of the judging area.

We are asking the Judges to cook with a team around their 10th contest.  We felt this will help them become better judges by understanding the Cooks side of competition.

We felt this would also be beneficial to the Cooks to get a judge’s input on what is happening in the judging area with appearance, and profiles.

We are encouraging Judges to take the Continuing Education quizzes on the KCBS website and to repeat the CBJ classes as a refresher so they will stay current to the rules, regulations and judging procedures.

The problem for judges, and especially new judges, is finding a team to cook with.  They know teams by their team name but do not know how to be in contact.  We tell the Judges not to fraternize with the teams on the day on the contest.  Judges are taking this statement as they cannot ever talk to the teams.  This is not the intent of the statement.  A Judge cannot be in the cook site the day of the competition; but can talk to Cooks if the Cook if the Cook has the time to walk away from the cook site to visit with the Judge.

A better relationship needs to be built between Judges and Cooks.  This can be done by Judges cooking and Cooks participating in the judging area.  A Cook does not have to be a Certified Judge to do other duties in the judging area.  Those duties include be turn-in, number changing, Table Captain, and left-over table.  We invite Cooks to come into the judging area and experience this side of competition.

There is a form for the Cook to fill out for a Judge working on their Masters.  A Judge should be involved and this should be a learning experience for both Judge and Cook.

If you would be willing to have Judges cook with your team, send the following information to: cbj_committee@kcbs.us.
