Great American Barbecue Festival Celebrates Expanded 5th Year

April 24, 2009
“Mardi Gras of Meat” attempts to draw “stay-cation” families with expanded offerings for children and music fans

Shortly after announcing it’s new location, to be held at The Wyandotte County Park at Capitol Federal Park @ Sandstone in Bonner Springs, KS, the Great American is rolling out a series of exciting new events for festival goers. Based on growth predictions from past customers, sponsors, and partners, it seems that “stay-cations” could be a viable alternative for area families to celebrate the Memorial Day holiday. Great American BBQ Executive Director, Tracy Satterfield shares that “We have built a series of new attractions that capture the “taste” of the city, and reflect the full Kansas City Experience. We will have representation from the Marching Cobras, the Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleaders, the Royals, and the Wizards”. In addition to those, some of the new offerings in sights, sounds, food and fun, will be:

Music Mainstage:
With the availability of the large venue stage, the GAB has expanded its musical offering to 19 regional bands spread over the 3 day event. The musical selection ranges from Caribbean calypso, classic blues, funk rock, western swing, zydeco, hot rod country and classic rock.

In addition to the upgraded band list, the GAB will be launching the “Fox4 Tribute Band Extravaganza”, on Sunday May24th. The all day tribute fest will feature the sounds of Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, AC/DC, Journey, Lynryd Skynyrd, and the Beatles.

KidZone & Carnival:
The new venue at Sandstone also allows for a larger, more customer friendly area to house its family area. “With a challenging economy, area families are looking for a local outlet, to share their holidays” says David Ruisch, the GAB’s Chairman, “and this will be a great experience for them”. The Great American has expanded to over 20 acres of carnival rides, inflatable’s, children’s games, and a “Kids Que” BBQ contest.

Culinary Experience:
From the ridiculous to the even more ridiculous. In addition to a variety of “legitimate” culinary demonstrations, a potpourri of events will take place, including the 2009 “Daniels BBQ Competitive Rib Eating Contest”. The goal of this nationally sanctioned amateur event is to consume more than 3.1 pounds of baby backs, in under 7 minutes… without having a “reversal of fortune”, or experiencing “biometric activity opposite of swallowing”. Ugh.
Other events include the creation and protocols used to make the “BBQ Explosion”, a defribrillatory pure meat combination of sausage, pork and beef, wrapped in a blanket of bacon.

Other Activities:
The Great American’s fifth year anniversary expects to have 275 cooking teams vying for $73,000 in prize money. The GAB will be held on Memorial Day weekend:

Capital Federal Park at Sandstone, in Bonner Springs

Friday May 22nd: Public gates open Noon-10PM
