BBQ Tour Stop #11: Wildwood, NJ

2010 NJ State BBQ Championship            

Chris and I headed into North Wildwood, NJ for the 12th Annual NJ State BBQ Championship. This was the third year that the tour has been to this event so it was a familiar drive down the Atlantic City Expressway from Philadelphia. We stayed at the Harbor Light Inn again this year, which is about a block away from some of the best beaches in the U.S.

We always seem to meet new teams and this was no exception. David of Wilbur’s Revenge stopped by the trailer to sign up for the Kingsford Points Chase and we got to visiting. David is a franchisee of Famous Dave’s and is new to competition BBQ. We also ran into some old friends from the past, Mike from Mason Dixon Smokers, the Philly Pigs and, of course, the Stewed, Qued and Tattooed team was in attendance. Three years ago, there were less than 30 teams squeezed into an area the size of a basketball court and this year 67 teams battled it out in a parking lot which bordered the seawall and the beach!

The BBQ contest has three ancillary contests on Saturday that include sauce, dessert and an Iron Chef with Italian sausage. Sunday had the regular KCBS categories. There was also a Certified Judge class taught by Ed Roith, which had over 80 attendees. It was great to visit with all the new judges and you could see them coming down the street with their red KCBS CBJ manuals in their hands. Jack and Patty, CBJ’s who stopped by last year, came by again for a visit.

Saturday brought rain for most of the day but the people still came out to listen to blues music from the main stage.  They also walked the streets taking in the craft area, BBQ vendors and displays including AAA, Hatfield Meats, Ford, and the KCBS Great American BBQ Tour! As the rain and skies cleared, the seagulls came out in force to scavenge dropped pieces of food and anything else that caught their eye. What goes in must come out, and there was seagull poo on the truck, trailer, stage and they even hit the smoker! 

On Sunday, Chris and I attended the awards ceremony where David and his Wilbur’s Revenge team won the Iron Chef category. TNT’s Dynamite BBQ won Reserve Grand, along with being the top Kingsford team.  Lo’ and Slo’ BBQ won Grand Champion.  On the way back to the trailer, Chris got her first funnel cake of the year.   She probably shouldn’t have been wearing her black Jack Daniels polo because it was black and white by the time she was finished.
