BBQ Tour Stop #3: Indio, CA

May 9, 2011

2011 Stagecoach Music Festival

On the way to Indio, Calif. for the Stagecoach Music Festival and BBQ contest, Christine and I took a slight detour to help promote the Inaugural Sam’s Club National BBQ Tour in Santa Fe, N.M. and Loveland, Colo. This was the first time in our BBQ Tour travels that we encountered snow. I guess I should clarify this a bit more, we had light snow flurries in the Denver area and then coming out of the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70, we encountered a full white out and snow drifts up to the bottom of road signs. Luckily we had packed long pants otherwise it would have been a much chillier ride. Just hoping for no snow when we return later in the year for the BBQ at the Summit event in Dillon!

Each year the Stagecoach Music Festival has top notch country music entertainers and this year Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood and Rascal Flatts headlined the weekend festival. One other thing the festival does is move the BBQ contest to a different location each year and this year was the best so far as the teams were right inside the main gate. Each day when the gates opened, we would watch people running to get the best seats in front of the massive stage. After people claimed their spots with blankets, they would roam the grounds and make their way to the BBQ area where we passed out hundreds of sample cups of Reser’s Potato Salad, Master of Mixes’ Big Bucket Margarita mix and Bloody Mary mix.

My stage was under one of the big tents so we did not have to worry about the sun all weekend and we were right across the field from the Ferris wheel. On Sunday I took a break and rode the Ferris wheel and could not believe the thousands and thousands of music fans spread out over the entire polo ground complex! The tent allowed folks to sit at one of the many picnic tables out of the sun to enjoy our demonstrations. While the sun was still high in the sky, we could not have asked for nicer weather in the upper 80’s, low 90’s and light jacket weather later in the evening.

I believe that if I review the last couple of recaps of Stagecoach, I would find references to all the bikini clad young women who frequent the music festival. This year was no different as the Katy Perry song “California Gurls” lyrics “daisy dukes, bikini’s on top” came to mind as the attire of choice.

This was the first Reser’s Potato Salad contest and while I didn’t get a chance to sample it, I was told that it was fantastic! Team Pip’n Hot won the best Potato Salad crown along with 2nd place for Best BBQ and When Pigs Fly won best BBQ along with Best Booth! All Sauced Up showed their Stagecoach dominance by defending last year’s Grand Championship and by placing no worse than third in a category.
